This book by Kevin Redwood and published by Amberley Publishing was released a few weeks ago.

Having a published price of £15.99, the book is available on Amazon for £10.99 at the time of writing.

Comprising of almost 100 pages, the book measures 16.5cm x 23.5 cm.

Probably best described as a pictorial history of freight in the Western Region, the book has pictures of the freight trains along with a detailed caption underneath.

Many different classes of locomotive are included, such as Class 37s and Class 47s as well as Class 03 and 08 shunters.

There are a variety of black & white and colour photos and it is very interesting to see the variety of freight wagons which were in use during this period.

The book also includes a 2 and half page introduction from Kevin Redwood where he describes the work that he did on the railways and how this led to him travelling across the Western Region, allowing him to catalogue so many different freight locomotives in different locations.

Being primarily made up of photos, with detailed descriptions, this is one of those books that you can open at any point and begin exploring the detail, not just of the locomotives and wagons and how the infrastructure used to be older signalling and railway buildings but also cars etc which are included as part of some images.

With many of these freight trains no longer operating, for example, due to the closure of coal mines, this book is a great historical record of what was transported on the railway not all that long ago.
