The General Steam Navigation Locomotive Restoration Society (GSNLRS) have posted their update from June 2021, containing lots of progress and exciting work on their Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class No.35011 “General Steam Navigation”.

Locomotive’s Frame

Work has focused on removing components to gain access, along with taking out parts surplus to requirements.

This includes the support castings for the Walschaerts valve gear, as the Society will be reinstating the Bulleid chain-driven valve gear and associated parts. The brake cylinder cross arms and supports and left-hand side bogie splasher have also been removed and labelled for storage.

Boiler

Virtually all the remaining boiler tubes have been removed from the boiler, with attention turning to removing loose rust and dirt to allow for inspection work later this year.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Work

With the nature of the work being carried out on 35011, CAD drawings play a key part. A lot of time is spent creating CAD drawings of both the frames and valve gearing to determine the best way to make them both fit together.

Soon to begin will be drawings for the air-smoothed casting, and smokebox arrangement. Drawings for the replacement frame stretchers are now finished, which now allows the Society to look at funding their construction through their ‘Putting Funds into the Frames’ appeal.

The Trailing Truck Transformers

This appeal to raise the funds towards restoring 35011’s Trailing Truck has started well, already gaining supporters. Looking for 30 members to contribute £500, members gain the following benefits:

  1. Certificate of membership of the ‘Trailing Truck Transformers’
  2. Name engraved on a suitable brass plaque attached to the refurbished Trailing Truck
  3. Regular updates on the refurbishment of the Trailing Truck
  4. An invitation to a VIP day at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway to see the completed Trailing Truck once it is returned to the railway.
