As football is coming home this summer, football commentator John Motson OBE has teamed up with train companies to keep fans moving safely across the network as England head into the Euros this summer.
The Euros kick off on the 11th of June and take place over 4 weeks across Europe with Britain hosting 12 games at Wembley, including the final on the 11th of July, Hampden Park in Glasgow will also be hosting 4 games.
The campaign features Motson’s iconic voice at stations and on social media with fans being treated to some of his classic commentary style.
On social media, fun videos have been posted featuring Motty commenting on everyday railway situations and helping passengers to play their part in helping everyone travel with confidence during the Euro’s.
The campaign is hoped to provide useful information to help keep everyone’s journey as smooth as possible with suggestions to plan and book both journeys ahead and also promoting National Rail’s Alert Me by Messenger service which is a unique, personalised, disruption messaging tool running via Facebook Messenger.
Train services to London and Wembley on Sunday 13th and Friday 18th June will be busier than normal as fans head to the England matches – advice for passengers is to book ahead and get a seat reservation if possible.
Due to Coronavirus, fans are also being reminded that options for watching the games in London will be more limited than usual, with the fan zone in Trafalgar Square not being open until at least the 21st June.
Robert Nisbet, Director of Nations and Regions for the Rail Delivery Group said: “Although we won’t be able to influence results on the pitch, train companies are looking forward to playing a key role in making Euro 2020 a success this summer. We’re expecting trains to be busier as football fans travel to and from the matches, which is why we are encouraging people to check before they travel and sign up for journey alerts from National Rail so that we can all travel with confidence.”
Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said: “As football comes home this summer, it’s fantastic that the much-loved voice of John Motson will be broadcast across our station airwaves encouraging fans and passengers to travel safely.
“Services are likely to be busier than normal, so I urge passengers to plan ahead, check the latest information with their operator before they travel, and follow our Safer Travel guidance. That includes wearing a face covering unless exempt, sanitising your hands regularly and keeping your distance where possible.”
John Motson OBE said: “With the football making the railway a little busier at the moment, train companies are continuing to provide increased cleaning and improved information so you can travel with confidence. Please help play your part in the team effort by planning ahead, wearing a face covering (unless exempt) and keeping your distance where possible.”
