The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway has announced that a key milestone has been met in the restoration of Hudswell, Clarke 0-6-0ST No.1604.
Currently offsite with a contractor based in Yaxham, Norfolk, the boiler for 1604 is in the process of being fully restored.
Recently Andrew Reen, a Boiler Inspector, has been on a site visit to assess 1604’s boiler to ensure all work carried out will enable the boiler to pass all necessary tests.
He was happy with the work and the boiler, allowing for the inner firebox to fitted inside the outer firebox. On Thursday the 20th of May 2021, this task was completed successfully.
The next stage will involve checking to ensure the firebox sections fit correctly.
Once everything fits nicely, the long tasks of fitting boiler stays will begin, which hold the inner and outer section of boiler’s firebox in the correct position.
This is brilliant news for The Middy, as this shows the boiler is now approaching the final stages of its restoration, after which it can return back to 1604’s chassis.

I have to admit, the Marvellously Spectacular Mid-Suffolk (Light) Railway must be ever so doign quite well, on doing a fine job on eventual restoration of this steam locomotive.
