By 2030, Colas Rail Group have set a brand new target to reduce carbon emissions by 30%.
It’s not just the emissions they are aiming to reduce, they have given themselves the additional commitment of the capture and the storage of carbon.
As of last year (2020), the group have guaranteed that they will plant 10 trees for every new recruit that comes into the business. They have recruited 1000 staff across England, Morocco, Indonesia, France, Belgium & Ivory Coast, each country was distributed 2000 trees for the reforesting project.
Reforest’Action manages the project in the UK, they select forestry projects and will monitor and finance them in close collaboration with a range of technical partners across the field.
The trees planted so far have been in the North York Moor National Park, near Great Ayton which is a well-known hill in North Yorkshire, and the North East of England, providing a better landscape for the local residents and the walkers who walk along the popular walking route.
There are multiple benefits to this project, some of them include the return of diversification in the ecosystem location which will aid the climatic and biological hazards return to normal.
The storing of carbon in the newly planted trees, not only slows down global warming but provides crucial habitat for animals. 2000 trees have meant carbon storage of 300 tons (one tree stores about 150kg of CO2 over 30 years) which creates potential shelter for over 6000 animals once established.
The global impact of this project will help to maintain continuity and will preserve the important forest cover for the area.
The trees are currently only 30-40cm but the Colas Rail staff hope to be able to visit the site once it has progressed into a more established area.
