This week the footbridge at Oakham railway station in Rutland has reopened to passengers after work to secure its future was completed.

The £856,000 project by Network Rail began back in October last year, train services were not affected by the work and passengers could use the level crossing to access the other platform.

Scaffolding was erected around the bridge which was grit blasted to remove the old paint.

Repairs to the metalwork were carried out and a parapet was installed along the edges of the bridge.

The footbridge at Oakham railway station has also had a new flooring surface installed and a fresh coat of red and white paint has transformed the look of the bridge.

The fencing around the work at the station should be removed in the next few days.

Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Midlands route, said: “The transformation of the footbridge at Oakham station is amazing and the work done here will protect it for years to come.

“As well as strengthening the bridge so passengers can continue using it safely, the revamp has brightened it up for people visiting the town. We want to thank passengers for their patience whilst this vital project was carried out.”

“We would like to thank our passengers for their patience whilst Network Rail carried out this work and we are looking forward to welcoming passengers back to Oakham when the lockdown restrictions end.”
