This week is the 175th anniversary of the opening of the railway station at Goring-by-Sea in West Sussex.
The railway station first opened on 16th March 1846 and today serves 0.5m passengers every year.
Situated on the line between Brighton and Chichester, the station provides passengers with links to Littlehampton and Hove and London Victoria
Network Rail have carried out improvement works to the station including extending the platform, installing new fencing and lighting, new platform surfaces and road crossing.
Work is also underway on the footbridge at Goring-by-Sea railway station, and this is due to be completed later this month.
There are other enhancements planned at the station including new benches, shelter and information screens.
These improvements are all part of Govia Thameslink’s station improvement programme, you can find out more about the programme here
Robert Walker, Area Manager for West Coastway at Southern, says: “With so much investment happening at Goring-by-Sea, it’s fantastic to be celebrating such a significant anniversary today. These improvements directly benefit Goring and its surrounding areas, providing customers with a better, safer station that’s ready for the next 175 years!”
Rowena Tyler, Southeast Communities Rail Partnership Community Development Officer, adds: “The Sussex Coast Line has a number of stations which have recently, or are soon-to-be, celebrating 175 years. Commemorating the important milestones help to inform the local community, especially at stations which have been adopted by local schools or community groups.”

And nearly 2 centuries of success.
Perhaps replace the footbridge and to add lifts to make the station step-free accessible.
It’s being restored, so it’s kinda too late to say that.
