The UK Government has announced its masterplan to develop a transport hub fuelled by .

Setting aside £3 million towards the project, the Government plan to base the new hub in the Tees Valley.

As the first scheme in the UK using Hydrogen as a source of power, the project marks a key milestone in the UK’s 2050 target date to be zero emissions.

The facilities would provide the grounds to carry out trials and tests to improve and adapt vehicles to run efficiently.

The wider benefits to the area would be up to 5,000 new jobs created in the North East of Britain, greatly boosting the economy, already a prior for the Government.

The hub could operational as early as 2025. Hydrogen could well provide a great fuel for future for transport in the UK alongside electricity, meeting changing transport demands as well our need to use greener modes of transport to well reduce the impacts of climate change.

Trials could see shops, warehouses and online retailers using hydrogen-powered vehicles to move goods as well as complete last-mile deliveries.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “By harnessing the power of hydrogen technology, we have the opportunity to bring long-term prosperity right across the country.

The hub will establish the UK as a global leader in hydrogen technology, paving the way for its use across all transport modes and propelling us towards our net-zero goals.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “From offshore wind manufacturing, carbon capture utilisation and storage and hydrogen, make no mistake Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool are at the forefront of powering forward the UK’s clean energy ambitions.”

“Our region already produces more than 50% of the UK’s hydrogen, so it was a no-brainer for the government to set up the UK’s first hydrogen transport hub in Teesside, so we can lead the way in developing the technology and fully unleash our area’s potential as we build back greener.”

“Teesside has led the world in steel manufacturing and engineering for generations. Now we are leading the world in the industries of the future and creating clean, good quality, well-paid jobs in the process.”
