ScotRail has announced that the last upgraded Class 43 High-Speed Trains (HSTs) have been delivered to them for their Inter7City services.

Inter7City now has a fleet of 26 refurbished Class 43s, with the first improved set entering service in Late 2018.

The power cars received the upgrade work at Brush Electric at Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Wabtec, based in Doncaster, undertook work on the coaches, which included:

• Easier access to on-board WiFi
• Increased legroom
• New seats and tables, along with bigger luggage compartments and power sockets
• Improve on-board catering services – which will begin once COVID-19 restrictions are eased
• Better onboard passenger information

Credit: ScotRailThis new fleet will provide huge benefits for passengers who travel between Scotland’s seven cities, such as:

• 33% increase in seat capacity
• 10 minute faster journeys, on average, between Inverness and the central belt
• Under three hours of travel time between Glasgow and Inverness

The routes operated by Inter7City are as follows:

• Glasgow / Edinburgh – Aberdeen.
• Glasgow / Edinburgh – Inverness.
• Aberdeen – Inverness (many Glasgow / Edinburgh – Aberdeen services will be extended through to Inverness).
• Glasgow / Edinburgh – Perth.
• Glasgow / Edinburgh – Dundee via Perth / Stirling.

ScotRail Engineering Director Syeda Ghufran said: “The final upgraded Inter7City high-speed train to be unveiled in Scotland is the last piece in the jigsaw to connect our seven cities, bringing better on-train facilities and quicker journey times.”

“We are confident customers will continue to benefit from all of these enhancements once the current coronavirus restrictions are lifted.”
