The Somerset and Dorset Railway Heritage Trust at Midsomer Norton has published an update on two appeals they have been running to generate funds to improve the railway and experience for passengers.
Refurb of RMB (Restaurant Miniature Buffet)
With a big thank you to everyone who has donated, £8,770 of the target £10,000 has been raised so far!
These funds have been used to fully transform the coach’s inside, where volunteers have spent many hours carrying out the work with COVID-19 measures in place. Work has included seats being reupholstered, new linoleum flooring and new lighting installed.
Following some attention to the brakes, the coach entered traffic for Santa trains during December 2020.
The only outstanding work is the repaint and lining out on the exterior of carriage, which can be completed once fundraising hits the £10,000 mark.

Bringing home the Goods – Mineral Wagons
With £3,429 donated so far, work has begun on restoring both wagons. Shotblasting showed which areas needed wasted metal cut out and replaced, which has progressed well.
A rust inhibitor has been applied to reduced further rust. Poor weather, along with lack of funds, has meant little work has been completed recently.
When more money is available, further replacement of metalwork and finally painting can take place. Once both of these wagons are finished, the Trust hopes to purchase more wagons to restore to add more vehicles to their demonstration train.
