The Bala Lake Railway has released a short update on three of their steam locomotives, which are all having work completed at the railway’s Llanuwchllyn Works.
Hunslet Alice is currently out of service awaiting a ten-year boiler overhaul.
This has now started, and the team has been stripping the locomotive down to the frames, awaiting the fitting of a brand new boiler.
The old boiler for Alice has life left but has been sold on to be of use to another locomotive.
Meanwhile, Holy War’s reconstruction continued at pace, with the rebuilding of the motion bearings.
Lastly, Hunslet ‘George B’, which is operational, has been prepared for the annual boiler inspection and also a steam test.
The Bala Lake Railway is currently closed due to government restrictions.

Alice’s old boiler is for sale, rather than sold. Julian Birley, Alice’s owner wanted a more traditional rivetted boiler, so over the last few years has funded the SVR to build a boiler which is ready to go straight in to the frames. There is still plenty of life in the old welded boiler, if anyone is interested Julian can be contacted via the BLR: [email protected]
