The main part of a £1.4m upgrade to a railway bridge in Sheffield is due to start on the 18th of January and means changes to the towpath on the River Don.
A temporary closure of the Tinsley towpath will take place whilst the bridge deck is replaced. Train services, and Tram Trains between Rotherham and Meadowhall, will not be affected by the work.
Teams from Network Rail have been on the site at Halfpenny bridge since November last year. The project will see the bridge strengthened, and the walkway and deck replaced.
The work is expected to be completed in April and will also see the bridge receive a new coat of paint.
The towpath which runs from Sheffield to Rotherham will be closed under the bridge will be closed while the work takes place. The Canal & River Trust has helped create a diversion for people along with a map.
Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East Route, said: “This is a really important piece of work which will enable train services to run reliably and safely for years to come, keeping passengers and goods moving across South Yorkshire.”
“There will be temporary changes to access of the Tinsley towpath. A clearly sign-posted diversion route will be in place, but this will be a longer route, so please allow extra time.”
