Another Pacer train has started to arrive at Dereham on the Mid Norfolk Railway to join the growing fleet of DMUs.
Pacer No. 144018, a three-car Class 144 train, has been acquired from Porterbrook following withdrawal from service with Northern.
The first car was delivered to Dereham by S A Smith on the 9th December, with the remaining two cars arriving soon.
144018 joins 142061 and 142038 on the Mid Norfolk Railway and give the heritage railway a flexible solution for off-peak running days alongside the railway’s first generation DMU fleet.
Charlie Robinson, the Chairman of the railway, said: “The acquisition of Pacers by the railway is important, as they join our first generation of Diesel Multiple Units and mean that we are assembling a significant collection of this oft-forgotten aspect of our railway heritage.”
He added: “Pacers have had in some quarters a controversial past, often being described as noisy and uncomfortable, but that you must remember was when they travelled at 70 mph on the national network. Here they will be travelling at much slower speeds and will be an excellent way to travel on our line and enjoy our beautifully Norfolk countryside views.”

Do look after it Mid Norfolk Railway. Perhaps North Norfolk Railway could also be interested in inheriting a Class 142 Pacer.
Very, very unlikely. They weren’t even interested in the W&M railcars, or LEV-1.

I still think it’s A Clever Idea… Pacer Units finding A New Lease of Life, let alone be Put to Good Use, Along Well-Restored (Heritage) Railways.
