Govia Thameslink Railway has issued travel advice for students who will be travelling home for Christmas on their trains.

The student travel window is open on the 3rd of December and the Government has asked students to travel in the window which runs until the 9th of December.

Tickets which have been already booked before the announcement can now be rebooked without paying additional fees.

Govia Thameslink has suggested that students should check when stations and trains are likely to be the busiest by using the ‘How Busy Is My Train’ facility on Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern web pages.

In addition, they should check National Rail Enquiries for details of any engineering work which may be taking place.

The ‘Passenger Connect’ tool is also available via the National Rail Enquiries website and provides real-time information through Facebook Messenger.

Jenny Saunders, Customer Services Director for Thameslink and Great Northern, says: “It’s been a tough year, especially for those who have been living away from home. That’s why we’ve been working with universities in our area to prepare for the travel window and help get students get back to their families safely.

“We’ll have plenty of services running during the travel window, but we would suggest everyone plans their journey well in advance. We’ve been doing huge amounts to keep our trains and stations clean and we urge everyone travelling to wear a face covering and wash their hands before and after their journey. This is easier than ever to do, as we now have hand sanitising stations available at all of our stations.”
