On the LMS Black 5 45337 website, it has been announced that the steam locomotive will be soon moving to the East Lancashire Railway.
The move from the Llangollen Railway to the East Lancashire Railway is set to take place in Mid-January 2021.
45337 is currently undergoing an overhaul by the 26B Railway Co. which they say will bring back 45337 to steam in her original LMS identity to 5337.
Preliminary work on the overhaul of steam locomotive 45337 has taken place on the tender, and the boiler has been lifted from the frames.
You can support the overhaul of 45337 by using the Easy Fundraising scheme, which is available in 4000+ retailers.

Great that it’s back home where it belongs. I have fond memories of this engine doing its stuff in the60’s and 70’s.
I think you might have got your engines mixed up. Withdrawn in mid sixties, Barry until 84/85, then a long restoration, mid 90’s before it ran again.
Heading back to an appropriate location and in an excellent choice of livery. Little point in running everything in the uninspiring “death of steam” BR livery when less and less people alive will remember BR steam anyway. Much better to see the glory years of steam celebrated.
Well, for two more years, anyway.
Regarding the recent messages concerning 45337’s livery.
We understand both Joseph’s and Jonathan’s comments about their own livery preferences, we all at 26B only remember the loco in BR livery too.
Liveries can be an emotive subject, but 36 years ago 26B rescued this loco from the cutters torch, therefore have had custodianship for longer than both the LMS and BR combined.
For this third (expensive) overhaul, and for the eventual relaunch back to traffic, returning this loco to the former identity as 5337 in LMS livery (as built) would be a fine accolade to provide her with.
Since the first restoration was completed back 1995, 45337 has only ever ran in BR livery, therefore, it is undoubtable that this Black Five will return back to BR livery once again, but not for the initial relaunch back to traffic.
Thank you for your comments.
For 26B.
Ran as M5337 for a while
From what I’ve heard it’s going to be a very long time before the final coats of paint are applied. So why worry about it now.
There is information around that this locomotive is in the process of changing ownership, can you confirm?
No.45337, is Also One of an Excellent Total of 18 ex-LMS Class (Black) Five Steam Tender Locos to have been Thankfully Rescued from Shear Scrap, let alone Enter Preservation.
Quite an Excellent Total, 18… and No.45337 is Forever One of Them, Forever Preserved to Return to Steam and Hopefully Roam the Rails Once Again.
Well as far as I’m Concerned… I do hope this Well-Preserved ex-LMS Tender Locomotive, is Well-Restored to Working Order, let alone do A Jolly Great Duty along the East Lancashire Railway during 2021.
Good Luck to this Loco, as well as to the East Lancashire Railway during 2021.
IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE LEFT THE ELR in the first place I worked on it back in the 80s went to Barry to help bring it to bury and work on it and put money into it
My preference would be for the Black 5 to keep her BR number of 45337. Whether I get to the ELR in 2021 to se the loco is another matter……
Don’t worry about 2021. It’s a very long term job. 2026/27 will be a more realistic date.
The move to Lancashire is fine but the change of livery ‘No’ few people are alive to recall the LMS livery. The main livery remembered by the largest number of existing people is BR!
