Over the Christmas break, teams from Network Rail have been busy working hard to improve services on the railway between London Euston, the Midlands and the North West.
Between Christmas Eve and Sunday the 27th of December, work took place to upgrade parts of the West Coast main line.
A multi-million-pound investment completed a number of projects, including:-
- Signalling upgrades at Birmingham New Street railway station
- Improvements to overhead lines near Watford, Liverpool and Crewe
- Rebuilding a bridge in Stafford
- Upgrades to track near London Euston, Aylesbury, Preston and Manchester
Tim Shoveller, managing director for Network Rail’s North West & Central region, said: “The schemes we have undertaken this Christmas were all critical pieces of work to make the railway better for the future.”
“I’m very proud of our frontline workers who have continued to work tirelessly throughout the pandemic to maintain and upgrade the railway for those who need it. This festive period has been no different, with hundreds of workers out delivering significant improvements, sometimes in very challenging weather conditions, across the North West and Central region.”

Why not replace ageing overhead wires between Ardwick Junction-Hadfield and Gosslop. And with electrification to Stalybridge. And to build a passing loop on the Abbey Branch Line at Bricket Wood.
