Rail passengers have been thanked after the major overhaul of the lifts at Tamworth station.
The project, costing nearly £675,000, saw three lifts taken out, mechanisms modernised, and new lighting installed.
The improvements will benefit the 1.3m passengers who use the station each year.
Tom Wadsworth, senior asset engineer at Network Rail, said: “I understand the work on the lifts has been disruptive for passengers over the last few months and I’d like to thank people for bearing with us. I hope the improvements speak for themselves and the more modern, brighter lifts make a real difference to people’s journeys with better more reliable step-free access to platforms.”
Sarah Higgins, head of stations for London Northwestern Railway, said: “I would like to thank our customers for their patience while Network Rail carried out these vital improvement works to keep our railway accessible for all. As well as being a valued local station, Tamworth is an important interchange for passengers heading to all corners of the country and these works will help us provide a smoother and easier travelling experience for all our customers.”
Christopher Pincher, MP for Tamworth, said: “I am glad to see our station’s lifts back up and running again, with improved reliability and function. Thank you to residents who have been patient whilst the lifts were out of action. I know a number had concerns and together I raised them with Network Rail, who were accommodating and open about the process. This new investment is good for our railway station, and good for Tamworth”
The upgrades started in July and were completed on the 29th October 2020.

Nice to see new lifts installed at Tamworth railway station. Which would make the station step-free accessible.
What about adding lifts at Rugeley Trent Valley and Rugeley Town.
