The LMS Patriot Project has sent RailAdvent an update on the construction work taking place to build LMS Patriot No. 5551 ‘The Unknown Warrior’.

A package of work has been agreed with Riley and Son E Ltd for repairs on the welding defects on the driving wheels for the locomotive.

The three wheelsets were moved to Riley and Son in Bury on the 12th October, with the centre driving wheels having already been pressed off the axle.

When the welds were removed from the locomotive’s wheels, “significant” defects were evident, and repairs have now been made to the required standard.

The team at Riley and Son’s continue to reassemble the centre driving wheel with fully approved procedures in place such as UAT, NDT and welding approval in conjunction with Ricardo Rail.

Back at West Shed, work has continued on the lubrication system as well as progressing on various brasswork and fittings such as the valve chest drains and tail rod bushes.

More components, such as the reverser shaft and the cylinder covers, have now returned to West Shed.

Over at Heritage Boiler Steam Services, the boiler stays continue to be fitted in preparation for the move to West Shed.

The slide bars and studs will need to be installed prior to the move to West Shed which will be completed by HBSS before the boiler is moved.
