It has been confirmed that the project to build steam locomotive 61662 ‘Manchester United’ has come to an end.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, work has been unable to progress on the locomotive, and with the project sat outside, the components of the locomotive have deteriorated.

All is not lost, as some parts from 61662 Manchester United will be sent to the B17 Steam Locomotive Trust and will be used on their project to build steam locomotive 61673 Spirit of Sandringham.

This means that at least part of 61662 Manchester United will steam again.

On the 61662 Manchester United Facebook page, the project leader said “I’m afraid that this is going to be our very last posting as we have been unable to work on No 61662 for almost a year and many parts are starting to deteriorate.”

  1. A wooden replica sat on crates wasn’t really a great idea. I guess it could be used to light the first fire in the real replica if any of the material lasts that long?

  2. the Numonic Plague strines again..the sooner its cured and things back to 90% at least normal the better .[still think its a bioweapon] why name it after a boring soccer team. London United would be better-a bus company

  3. So, so sorry to hear about this now former project havign become a thing of the past.

On the bright side, At least some of the surviving parts and frames are at least going to be reused, for another new-build loco design project.

My heart goes out to those who tried their hardest and best… on trying to recreate a long defunct classic loco design.
