Network Rail has released details of a cleanup of graffiti which has taken place on the Merseyrail network in Southport.
The clean-up by Network Rail workers from the Liverpool team supports the recent commitment by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to improve the look and feel of the railway.
Over six hours were spent by the team painting the cabinets in Southport which are a target for vandals.
The public has been reminded that graffiti is a crime and incidents can be reported to Network Rail’s 24-hour national helpline on 03457 11 41 41.
Allan Gibbs-Monaghan, infrastructure delivery manager at Network Rail, said: “Cleaning up vandalised walls and areas will improve the look and feel of the rail network and will, we hope, help to restore people’s confidence as we work to win back passengers. Our goal is to make sure everybody using the railway feels safe and comfortable.
“And our message to graffiti vandals is to stay away from the railway, not least for your own safety. Fast-moving trains can be very dangerous.”
Chris Heaton-Harris MP, Rail minister, said: “We’ve been clear that the blight of graffiti on our railways must be tackled, and I am delighted to see Network Rail are focused on dealing with the problem.
“As we build back better removing graffiti across the North West will improve our railway and make stations and services more pleasant for passengers.”

I hate seeing graffiti. It’s not art at all. It’s just vandalism. 😡
Wasting tons of taxpayer money to destroy art, and have miles of boring and depressive grey walls instead of colors and life, not to mention in a place where no one
, but people that care about it will see it = Priceless idiocy.
Why do such silly people risk their lives when trespassing on the railways and being stupid including causing property damage by graffitiing on anything including on trains. That the clean up costs £Thousands. It’s ridiculous, dangerous and unacceptable.
Be good in those with homes backing on to rail facilities were prosecuted for chucking their rubbish over their back fence.
