The 7027 Thornbury Castle Facebook page have posted photos showing the latest restoration work on Great Western Railway (GWR) 4073 ‘Castle’ Class No.7027 “Thornbury Castle”, with work picking up in pace as volunteers return to Loughborough Motive Power Depot (MPD) at the (GCR).

Further disassembly of the tender’s mainframe allows for better inspection, with a better view of a crack, already discovered, being given. The team can only decide on the best method for repairs once they know the full details of the cracks.

Volunteers have been busy stripping the old black paint off the coupled wheelsets, ready for painting into a red oxide base coat to protect the wheelsets better. With many spokes on each wheel, the job is not easy but important to preserve this vital part of “Thornbury Castle”.
