Greater Anglia has announced that railway station has been named Large Station of the Year at the 2020 National Rail .

The award comes after the completion of the restoration of Norwich station’s ornate ceiling, with repainting it in heritage colours to add the finishing touches to the redevelopment of the concourse.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, said, “It’s great recognition for a station that’s seen lots of improvements recently, a much-improved layout and a more spacious, modern feel to the station concourse for our customers.”

“The fabric of a building is one thing, but it’s our people who make the big difference. So, I’m delighted that all the people that work in and operate from the station, as well as those who worked so hard to improve it, have been recognised for a job well done.”

“Investing in upgrades to stations across the network is extremely important to Greater Anglia, demonstrating our commitment to providing excellent facilities and service to our customers.”

Back in 2017, Greater Anglia invested more than £3 million to transform the station concourse at Norwich.

The work included relocating the ticket gates to create better access to the toilet facilities, better cycle parking and a new waiting room.

In 2019, more than 40,000 people passed through Norwich every week, according to data from the Office of Rail and Road.

The latest awards now mean that for the third time in four years, Greater Anglia has won the Large Station of the Year Award, following on from awards for Cambridge in 2017, and Ipswich in 2018.

  1. I like Norwich railway station. Such a beautiful railway station in Norwich. I used to live near Norwich and went from Norwich to London Liverpool Street, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Sheringham, Cromer, Ely, Peterborough, Cambridge, Attleborough, Wymondham and Thetford.

Which Greater Anglia now operates services with Stadler Flirt Class 745 and Class 755. And East Midlands Railway still operates from Norwich to Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street with the Class 158 Sprinter Express.
