Nathan Wilson, a volunteer, is heading up to the top of Snowdon, in Wales, and to make it more of a challenge, he is taking Derek Crouch’s nameplate to the top with him.

Nathan is heading to Wales for a few days next week and will be raising funds for the Derek Crouch overhaul project at the Nene Valley Railway.

As you can see from the photo above, the nameplate isn’t the smallest, or the lightest around, which will make the challenge that little bit more difficult.

The Small Loco Group at the Nene Valley Railway is overhauling 1539 ‘Derek Crouch’, which hauled the first train on the preserved railway in April 1974.

2024 sees the 50th Anniversary of the first train and is also Derek Crouch’s 100th birthday, and the group aims to have the locomotive in steam for these events.

Nathan Wilson told RailAdvent: “While I’m going to be in Wales for a few days, the thought came into my mind about climbing Snowdon, which then snowballed into the idea of doing it to help raise funds for the overhaul of ‘Derek Crouch’ at the NVR. To make it more of a challenge, and to link the loco into the climb, I had the idea of taking one of the nameplates with me to the top. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and hopefully raising some more money for the NVR pioneering loco!”
