Appeal launched to cover cost of crankshaft repairs on Class 40 locomotive

The has announced that, sadly, a crack in the crankshaft of No. 40135 has been detected, and an appeal has been launched to help fund the work required.

The crack was detected in the crankshaft on 40135 and a full engine stripdown is required.

In addition, replacement bearings and big end bearings are required – the bearings need to be replaced to suit the new crankshaft.

A full assessment on the spare crankshaft will be completed to see its fit for use, but it will require specialist preparation before it is used to make sure the shaft is straight and journals need to be cleaned and polished, and oil ways flushed out.

40135, Rawtenstall - Item ListingWhilst the power unit is out, the main generator will be overhauled. The engine room will be deep cleaned and painted as well as all the floorplates and other painting.

However, the first priority for The Class 40 Preservation Society is to complete work on 40106, which will allow the locomotive to return to the Severn Valley Railway.

This will then allow the society to cost up work, and start planning to fix 40135.

  1. Rail Advent, this article is shockingly written, surely you can do better than this? The grammar is appalling and the partial sentences repeated makes it clumsy to read. Not to mention the last few paragraphs being strung together in any old order with crucial words apparently missing. Articles like this highlight the fact that so many people are unable to write properly in this day and age, and simply need re-educating. A 2 year GCSE English literature & language course ought to suffice. It could otherwise have been an interesting article, not a frustrating read. Please proof read in the future!

      Thanks for the feedback. Every article does go through a 3 stage approval process, with this one receiving 4 revisions from the original written text. Unfortunately on this occasion, the revision published was not the final revision, due to a slip of the mouse at publication time.

  2. Expensive job; it would be interesting to know how old the crankshaft is-was it the original? Might even be worth looking for a replacement 16SVT engine in better condition, although they must be quite a rarity now.
