Southern Locomotives Ltd (SLL) has posted the latest update on their fleet of steam locomotives.
With only 34072 “257 Squadron” in revenue earning service currently, the company needs continued help from its supporters and new members to ensure progress on engines undergoing overhauls and restoration can continue.
34010 “Sidmouth”
Currently, at Weybourne on the North Norfolk Railway, work on 34010’s boiler is paused until SLL can generate more funds.
Being steamed last in the 1960s, extensive work is needed on the firebox where a new rear tube plate and U-channel will be required. A structure has been built around the boiler to ensure a safe working and protect the boiler.
34028 “Eddystone”
Staff and volunteers resumed work on “Eddystone” from early August to finish off its overhaul.
Work has begun on preparing the tender for 34028 as well as the engine itself. The tender will require a repaint as three years exposed to the elements has taken its toll. All going well 34028 is planned to return to steam during Spring 2021.
34053 “Sir Keith Park”
Road transport from Tyseley Locomotive Works to Tunbridge Wells on the Spa Valley Railway should be taking place soon, with no date set for when 34053 will begin passenger trains along the heritage line.
34070 “Manston”
With a big thanks from SLL to anyone who has sent them donations since the July update, they are pleased to report Tyseley has been given the go-ahead to overhaul “Manston”. The frame will need lifting from the coupled wheels to inspect the condition of the axleboxes, horn guides etc. New boiler tubes will be needed too. Current estimations see 34070 back in service in 2021.
34072 “257 Squadron”
Returning to passenger services on the Swanage Railway following the COVID-19 lockdown, 34072 will work alongside Southern Railway U Class No.31806 on all steam hauled services. Some minor repairs to the cylinder packing have been carried out to reduce steam leaking.
80104
Unlikely to be used much for the rest of 2020, SLL estimate boiler work alone on 80104 will cost £150,000. As it stands, SLL needs three / four locomotives in service to generate enough funds before 80104’s overhaul can begin.
Norman
Newly machined horn guides have been being fixed into place, with the disassembly of the firebox underway, where a new foundation is required. The left-hand cylinder block has seen a new liner fitted and pistons machined to size. Work is still set to be finished by Spring 2021 for a return to service on the Spa Valley Railway.
