Nexus has announced that a major track replacement scheme between Gateshead and South Tyneside will be carried out on the during August 2020.

This is the latest work as part of the £8 million upgrade scheme.

The next upgrade will be a 1.8km stretch between Heworth and Pelaw, and the work will take place over four weekends, starting August 8th. The Metro will not be running over this section during the works, so a frequent rail replacement bus service will be in place.

The bus route is in operation as follows:

  • Number 900 will operate from Gateshead South Shields on 8th and 9th August.
  • Number 901 will operate from Gateshead to South Hylton.
  • Express replacement bus services will also be running, stopping at three stations only on each route. X900 will run between Gateshead, Heworth and South Shields on August 8th and 9th and between Gateshead,  Heworth and Jarrow on the three following weekends. Express bus X901 will run between Gateshead – Heworth – Park Lane on all four-weekend closures.

Chief Operating Officer at , Martin Kearney, said: “We’re carrying out major track renewal work south of the Tyne during August. This will ensure that Metro is in good shape for the autumn and years ahead as the economy starts to recover.

“This is the culmination of an £8m track renewal programme throughout Gateshead and South Tyneside, which has been ongoing over the last 12 months. The focus is on the renewal of a 1.8 kilometre section of track that runs from Heworth to Pelaw.

“This project will mean disruption to our customers over four consecutive weekends and I apologise in advance for that. By packing the work into weekends are keeping the amount inconvenience to an absolute minimum.

“These are key Metro routes and they are vital for the communities that we serve, so we have to ensure that they are ready to carry trains for many years to come.”
