In support of the city’s food banks, Central station hosted a collection on Thursday 23rd July.

As part of a series of donation drives that will run until the 20th August, volunteers from Trussel Trust staffed a collection point on the concourse from 7 am until 6 pm.

The Trussel Trust aids in the organisation and operation of over 1,200 food banks in the UK including many in the greater Glasgow area.

Food banks need a wide range of goods, with the following items particularly welcome; tinned vegetables, tinned meat, tinned fruit, cereal, packet mashed potatoes, rice/pasta, UHT milk, and rice puddings.

Station staff and the food bank volunteers will be observing social distancing whilst carrying out the collections.

Safety measures have been put in place to ensure that passenger can donate safely via socially distanced drop-offs and protecting their volunteers via PPE.

Claire McCunnie, from Glasgow South West Foodbank, said: “We’re determined to reach a future where everyone has enough money for essentials. But while we work towards that future, food banks like us need your support this summer.

“We’re so pleased to be working with the rail industry to collect donations in – it’ll make it really easy for people to drop off donations and make a difference in the community.”

Drew Burns, station manager for Central, said: “The pandemic has been a uniquely challenging time for everyone in our communities, but particularly for those who were already facing difficult personal circumstances.

“Passengers and staff at Central always show themselves to be generous and community-spirited when we host charities in the station and we’re sure they’ll be quick to respond to this appeal. Even a small donation will be gratefully received and well used supporting people across our community.”
