The Locomotive Conservation and Learning Trust (LCLT) are seeking to raise £50,000 to complete the current restoration of their engine, London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) J21 Class No.65033.
Following the Heritage Lottery Fund granting money towards the restoration, a major milestone was reached in the overhaul of 65033 when the locomotive was delivered by road to Locomotive Maintenance Services Ltd (LMS Ltd) in Loughborough in June 2019.
Disassembly of the engine has been completed, with the focus now on restoring components for rebuilding the locomotive.
The £50,000 the trust is hoping to raise will go towards two major items of 65033, these being a new tender tank and fitting a new copper inner firebox. All reusable parts which could be restored from the old tender have been removed, and new frame plates for the tender delivered to LMS Ltd.
Built in 1889 for the North Eastern Railway (NER) to a design by T W Worsdell, No.876 performed freight traffic duties around the North East area, even during LNER and British Railways ownership.
Withdrawn from traffic twice (First time by the LNER as No.5033 before being reinstated due to World War Two), 65033 was purchased for preservation by Frank Atkinson, being in steamed up until 1984.
A new lease of life came for 65033 when the LCLT was formed in 2009, with support from the Stainmore Railway Company based at Kirkby Stephen East station, restoration work is in progress, with 2022 the current date the LCLT hope to return the engine to service, numbered as 876 in NER livery.
