Major railway bridge renewals begin this weekend in St Helens

Rainford Bypass Railway Bridge St Helens

Major work on a railway bridge in is set to begin this weekend.

The investment, part of the Great North Rail project, will see the railway bridge over the Rainford Bypass (A570) refurbished and strengthened, so it remains safe for years to come.

To allow the work to be completed safely, lane closures will be in place on Rainford Road between Mossborough Island and Lodge Lane from 5 pm on Saturday 18 July until Monday 26 October 2020.

There will also be six full road closures between 5 pm on Saturday to 6 am on Monday on the following weekends:

  • Saturday 18 July to Monday 20 July
  • Saturday 25 July to Monday 27 July
  • Saturday 5 September to Monday 7 September
  • Saturday 12 September to Monday 14 September
  • Saturday 17 October to Monday 19 October
  • Saturday 24 October to Monday 26 October

During the closures, a road diversion will be in place and will be signposted. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be open throughout the duration of the project.

Nathaly Oshodin, scheme project manager for , said: “I’d like to thank residents and road users in advance for their patience while we complete this major upgrade to the railway bridge over the Rainford bypass.

“The Great North Rail Project investment will secure the bridge’s future for road users below and improve the reliability of rail journeys for rail passengers above.”

Work to refurbish the bridge will take place during a combination of day and night-time shifts.

Network Rail has written to local people about the work on the railway bridge, and is working with St Helens Council to minimise the disruption to road users.
