‘Bottom-end’ Alignment

Recent work has been focused on the striped frame of the engine. Optical Alignment Gear has been set up to ensure the horn faces are the correct dimensions.

Accurate set up of the components forming the rolling chassis is key to reduce down-time during the engine’s 10-year ticket and increasing the life of each component.

The Great Western Railway became the first British railway to use this equipment, which increased miles between repairs or maintenance was required.

Once checked and any corrections made to ensure the horn guides are true, they will be ready for when work begins on overhauling the coupled wheel’s axleboxes.

The photos show the equipment used assessing the horn guides.
