A new shop and better toilet facilities are part of £3 million improvements planned for Ipswich railway station.
Work is set to start this month on the scheme, which will see the ticket office relocated, more ticket machines installed, a new shop space, and relocated toilets.
At the same time, the station will be rewired to provide modern lighting for passengers.
The work is the second and final phase of a project to improve the station for passengers.
Three years ago, Greater Anglia invested £2 million in improvements for the station, including a complete refurbishment of the existing foyer and ticket hall to create more space, a large airport-style waiting room was created as well as more seats with plug points for charging. Additional ticket machines were installed, and more shops including Starbucks and Greggs opened at the station.
Improvements to Ipswich station forecourt was also carried out in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Borough Council with an improved layout, including better walking routes.
Simone Bailey, Greater Anglia’s Asset Management Director, said: “We’re pleased to be starting the final phase of work at Ipswich station.
“There will be minimal impact to customers while the work takes place. It is due to be completed next summer.
“Last year, around 3.5 million people used the station, so we’re pleased to improve facilities for customers who are currently travelling and those who will travel again in the future.”

Why does Ipswich railway station need to be be upgraded or to have improvements once again. It’s already have been refurbished many times and it doesn’t need to be upgraded again. The railway station is still a icon for the Suffolk County Town and has good bus links to other areas around Ipswich and across Suffolk. Leave the railway station alone.
Why not upgrade other railway stations on the Greater Anglia network such as Colchester that the existing building needs replacing and yes some improvements to Colchester station including a new lift linking from the station concourse to the subway. As there are lifts that links with the platforms from the other side of the station.
Been to Ipswich railway station many times and it’s such a nice railway station that serves the town centre via crossing over the River Orwell which is only a bus ride or walking distance from the station.
It’s good that Greater Anglia have improved their railway stations across their network and to deliver much better railway services and stations that caters everything including being step-free accessible. And the new trains that are also step-free and disabled friendly.
