Nexus has announced that its workers have raised more than £12,000 to help people who are living with Dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society will benefit from the donation after a year of fundraising efforts.
A range of events was held in support of the charity, from heritage tours on the Tyne and Wear Metro, to cake sales, raffles and other efforts from individuals.
Nexus chose to support the Alzheimer’s Society in 2019/20 as part of its fundraising drive.
The money, £12,675 in total, was handed over at a virtual cheque presentation:
Chief Operating Officer at Nexus, Martin Kearney, said: “Our employees have done a great job this year with their fundraising efforts for Alzheimer’s Society. Lots of staff have got involved, arranging cakes sales and doing charity walks, helping out a really worthy cause.
“We set a target of £10,000, and we have raised over £12,000. It’s a fantastic sum of money that will go to support people living with dementia in our region. It is support that is all the more important given the devastating impact the Covid-19 crisis has had on the most vulnerable people in our society and the wider charitable sector.”
Dan Nelson, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in the North East, said: “This is fantastic fundraising achievement by Nexus – we are incredibly grateful for their support.
“Right now, people living with dementia need our support more than ever because the coronavirus pandemic has hit them harder than any other group. A quarter of those who have died from Covid-19 had dementia.
“Since the lockdown began, our trained staff have made more than 100,000 welfare calls to people with dementia and their carers to offer support, information and to reassure them that they are not alone. Every penny raised by our dedicated fundraisers is helping us to continue this vital work.”
