Transport for Wales is reminding passengers to use public transport for essential travel only, and where there are no other travel alternatives so that the transport is safe for essential workers.
This is part of TfW’s Travel Safer Campaign. TFW is currently running on a reduced timetable, and the trains have limited capacity due to the social distancing rules being enforced.
As non-essential businesses and pubs are opening next week, TfW wishes that passengers think about their transportation and understand that public transport space is limited on the trains.
Additional safety measures in stations and on trains have been put into place, including social distancing, one-way systems, additional cleaning and following government advice regarding face coverings whilst on transport.
The Travel Safer campaign promotes five key principles for public transport users. Stay local, avoid busy periods, follow our latest advice, exercise while you travel and respect our staff and other passengers at all times. This will help to ensure that the spread of COVID-19 is limited to TFW Services.
Unfortunately, TfW has already seen examples of people disregarding the guidelines and advice. People are ignoring and vandalising the current signage, sitting in seats clearly marked for social distancing instead of allocated seats, and not following one-way guidance at stations.
These safety measures are for the protection of colleagues and customers, and TfW asks that the public follow the guidance, to minimise the spread of the virus.
James Price, Transport for Wales CEO said: “The safety of customers and colleagues is our top priority and we’re asking everyone to only use public transport for essential travel and where there are no other travel alternatives. Our capacity has been massively reduced due to social distancing measures and we must maintain safe space for those key workers using our services. If people have to travel, we are asking customers to please keep in mind those five Travel Safer principles – they are in place for everybody’s well-being.”
