West Midlands Trains are adding thousands of seats to its timetable from next week as demand for rail travel increases as lockdown measures ease.
The operator, which runs West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services, is stepping up its timetable with dozens of extra train services from Monday 6th July 2020.
However, the advice remains that train travel is for essential journeys only, and those who have to travel are reminded to use a face covering in line with new regulations.
Julian Edwards, managing director of West Midlands Trains, said: “This new timetable marks an important milestone for our customers and our colleagues as the country begins to get back to work. Since the pandemic began we have moved quickly to adapt our timetable based on the level of demand and the availability of our own staff, who are not immune to the effects of coronavirus. I am pleased we are now in a position where we can run more trains with as many carriages as we possibly can to help our passengers travel with confidence.”
Key changes include:
- 40,000 additional seats on LNWR services to and from London every weekday, including 10,000 at peak times.
- Additional trains between Worcester and Birmingham every weekday
- Trains between Birmingham and Wolverhampton will operate more often from Monday – Saturday.
- Trains between Crewe and Stafford via Stoke-on-Trent will continue onto Birmingham New Street from Monday to Saturday.

With the Class 196 CAF Civity DMU that are under construction will operate on West Midlands Railway non-electrified services to replace the Class 170 and Class 153 DMUs from next year. And Class 730 Bombardier Aventra to operate on London Northwestern Railway & West Midlands Railway and to replace the Class 323 and Class 350/2 Desiro EMUs to enter service from next year.
