Work has been completed on the East Suffolk line to install new rail equipment to make level crossings safer.
Axle counters have been installed at 27 level crossings along the line between Ipswich and Lowestoft.
Axle counters detect whether a train is occupying a section of track, which is then used to operate the barriers.
The new system gives signallers a better insight into where trains are and allows them to make better decisions and reduce the time the barriers are down.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “Our priority is to run a safe and reliable rail network and teams have been carrying out crucial work to make necessary improvements. The upgrade of this vital part of the signalling system makes the operation of level crossings safer and more efficient, benefiting passengers, motorists and pedestrians across Suffolk.”

Most other level crossings have been replaced by bridges and underpasses. Even pedestrian level crossings have been replaced by footbridges and foot-tunnel underpass. I like the idea of this and many level crossings might not be closed but to be monitored 24/7 365 days a year every year with CCTV also been installed at level crossings.
