The Bala Lake Railway has an ongoing appeal, the President’s Appeal, which is seeking to raise funds towards vital repairs on the Llanuwchllyn Signal Box.
The signal box is unique and a key railway building at Llanuwchllyn Station. Built by the Great Western Railway in 1896, the signal box features a Double-Twist frame design, with only two surviving into preservation. However, Llanuwchllyn signal box is even more unique in being the only Double-Twist frame to remain in its original location.
On top of this, it has also become a popular attraction, with the railway allowing people to visit the box and the artefacts housed inside.
In recent years the signal box’s condition has been deteriorating, to the point the President’s Appeal was set up to raise funds towards the repair costs.
Major work has already been carried out the floor with replacement joists fitted, allowing floorboards to be fixed in place.
The old windows and worn out frames have been removed, with replacements under construction. A new design of stairs, featuring 42° gradient steps over the current 45° ones has been completed, with a start made to manufacturing the new stairs.
The President’s Appeal has already helped fund many tasks, with donations being greatly appreciated by the railway and its volunteers.
Donations do not necessarily have to be money, as the railway is currently trying to source hardwood pieces needed to build the new window frames for instance.
