Network Rail is urging the public to take extra care at level crossings in Wales and the Western Region, as rail services have increased.

Freight trains are also running, and are subject to change at very short notice.

The message from Network Rail is aimed at those whose exercise includes the use of a level crossing, the farming community and those who trespass on the railway illegally.

An increase in the use of footpath level crossings has been seen by Network Rail as the public take advantage of the warmer weather and take a walk or cycle ride as part of their exercise.

Users of level crossings are being reminded to close gates and keep children and dogs close by when using a level crossing.

If using a level crossing, users should concentrate, check both ways before crossing, understand the warnings, and cross quickly.

Mike Gallop, Network Rail’s route director for the Western route, said “An increase in the amount of traffic travelling across the railway network will result in an increased risk to those in and around the tracks. It is crucial that members of the public understand that services are increasing. They are starting earlier in the day and ending later, they are more frequent from this week and, importantly, additional changes could happen a short notice. Network Rail looks after and maintains a lot of land across the Western route and for many, these have proved to be lovely spots to take some daily exercise, but additional vigilance is now needed. People need to be aware of the dangers in order to keep safe and only travel if necessary, to do their part to protect the NHS.”
