Following successful collaboration progress on the Class 66 fleet, Siemens Mobility Limited has awarded DB ESG the contract for design work on the Class 60, 59, 57 and 47 locomotives.
DB has received the additional work to provide the installation design work for the European Train Control System (ETCS).
This order follows from the one announced in June 2018 to provide the mechanical and electrical installation work for the Class 66 locomotives.
The work forms part of Network Rail’s Digital Railway project. Siemens Mobility has a contract with Network Rail for provision of first-in-class design and fitment of Siemens’ ETCS Trainguard 200.
Siemens has sub-contracted DB ESG to provide installation design and support of an ETCS Level 2 on-board and a TPWS/AWS solution.
DB has expertise in freight locomotive engineering and is also experienced in delivering modification programmes.
Commenting on this announcement, Nick Goodhand, Managing Director, DB ESG said:
“We have enjoyed the challenges of the Class 66 project and working closely with all
the operators and associated stakeholders. We understand the cab space constraints,
the importance of human factors and the complexity of freight vehicles, including the
number of Class variants within each fleet type. We are delighted to be continuing our
working relationships and thank Siemens Mobility for the faith that they have put in us
through these additional orders “

The Class 47, Class 57, Class 59, Class 60 and Class 66 the best, reliable freight locomotives. Which is good that these locomotives to have ETCS (European Train Control System) fitted/installed onto these locomotives. And other freight locomotives should follow on having ETCS fitted.
