Network Rail has announced that engineers will be carrying out essential maintenance and upgrade work over the Easter bank holiday.

The works taking place over the weekend have been significantly reduced in response to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Only work that is essential to the continued safe running of the network is going ahead.

Passengers whose journeys are not essential are asked to please stay at home.

Over the bank holiday weekend, engineers will be working on the West Coast Mainline to renew an ageing bridge near Beattock.

In Glasgow, engineers will undertake work to refurbish a key junction to the south-east of the city.

These works will affect services on the West Coast Mainline and some ScotRail services, between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh, Motherwell and Lanark.

What did the officials say?

Alan Ross, Network Rail Scotland’s director of engineering and asset management, said:

“Over Easter we will continue to complete vital engineering projects to make sure our railway is able to keep key workers and essential freight services moving during the current crisis.

“We have carefully reviewed all the work we are delivering and have postponed non-essential projects.

“We are also appealing to the public to listen to the Scottish Government’s advice and only travel if it is unavoidable.”
