The East Somerset Railway (ESR) has posted some photos of the drawings Steve Masters has produced of Great Western Railway 5101 Class No.4110 using Computed Aided Design (CAD) software.

Although the team at the ESR’s Cranmore Locomotive Works cannot carry out any physical work on restoring 4110, CAD drawings can be produced behind the scenes.

So far Steve has drawn the cylinder blocks (with both blocks attached and cleating (more commonly known as cladding) fitted), boiler (with ashpan and cladding fitted) and both water tanks. Further components may be modelled if they can assist the team in restoring 4110.

The benefits of producing the cladding as CAD drawings is they can be turned into flat patterns, allowing them to be laser cut and formed into the correct shapes. This should save time in building the cladding for 4110.
