Twenty First Century Narrow Gauge – A Pictorial Journey is a new book from publishers Pen and Sword, which was released in 2019. This book looks at some of the many views author James Waite captured on many of the narrow gauge railways around the world.
This hardback book measures 23cm x 29cm and has over 280 pages full of colour photographs – around 300 in fact! The book has a published price of £35 and can be picked up on Amazon for around a similar price.
The narrow-gauge railways were and still are a hive of activity today, and this book provides a high-quality pictorial record of some of them around the world that still operate to this day.
Illustrated throughout with colour photographs showing the wide variety of locomotives that operate on the narrow-gauge railways, the book also has some views of the infrastructure used to house the locomotives.
Twenty First Century Narrow Gauge is split into 61 different sections, covering the different countries.
The book also has acknowledgements of the author to whom have helped him create this book.
There is also a comprehensive list of all the locomotive builders who built locomotives for the many narrow gauge railways in the world, including Hunslet, Davenport, ALCo, and Bagnall.
There are many countries covered in the book, including Canada, USA, Mexico, Finland, Wales, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Kenya, Pakistan, Thailand, China and Japan.
It is great to see different engines operating around the world some of which have similarities to those that operate here in the UK.
Each section is made up of collections of half-page and full-page high-quality photos, with captions containing information regarding the locomotives and the railways that they run on.
We found this to be just the right amount of information and didn’t impede on the photos.
This book then is a superb collection of photos and information for lines that some people cannot get to, or may not see a train run again – like the Penrhyn Quarry Railway in Wales.
Whether you want to see photos from railways in your country or see how other railways operate around the world, Twenty First Century Narrow Gauge is a great addition to any bookshelf.
This book is available to purchase from Amazon and Pen & Sword.
We would like to thank Pen and Sword for providing RailAdvent with a copy of this book to review.
