Network Rail has announced that it will be starting work to improve three level crossings in Leicestershire next month to make sure they carry on working reliably.

Engineers will be replacing the old barrier gates with new ones at Coalville level crossing in North West Leicestershire, Bardon Hill level crossing in Hugglescote and Desford level crossing in the Hinckley and Bosworth District.

In order for the work at each level crossing to be carried out safely, there will be changes to access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The improvement work will take place during the following dates:

  • Work will take place at Coalville level crossing between Thursday, 2 April and Monday, 6 April. A clearly signposted diversionary route for motorists will be in place and pedestrian access will be maintained during this time.
  • Bardon Hill level crossing will be closed between Thursday, 16 April and Sunday, 19 April. A clearly signposted diversionary route for motorists will be in place.
  • Desford level crossing will be closed between Thursday, 30 April until Monday, 4 May. A clearly signposted diversionary route for motorists will be in place during this time.

What did the officials say?

Vinny Briggs, Route Level Crossing Manager for , said:

“This is really important work to modernise these level crossings and make sure they remain fit for purpose.

“The new barriers will improve the reliability of the level crossings in Leicestershire and therefore, help to reduce delays on the railway.

“We are working hard to minimise any disruption whilst this work takes place and would like to thank all those impacted for their patience.”

  1. Network Rail will still be working despite the Coronavirus outbreak. I do hope that their orange army team will be ok when working on the railways during the COVID-19 infestation.
