Upgrade to these two Penistone Line stations begin this weekend

Network Rail makes progress in preparation for longer trains on the Penistone line

Network Rail has announced that it is working with Northern to upgrade platform one at Denby Dale and platform one at station on the Penistone Line.

Work will begin on Saturday 8th February to lengthen platform one at Denby Dale station. This allows longer trains with more seats to call there.

Whilst the work at Denby Dale is carried out, the station car park will be closed to make space for a small compound at the station.

During this time, one disabled parking space will be available to use. This work is expected to be completed by Sunday 15th March, and the car park will reopen on Sunday 22nd March.

Engineers will also start work to lengthen platform one at Lockwood station on Saturday 8th February.

The work at Lockwood and at Denby Dale will not impact on train services, and is working closely with Northern to minimise any disruption for passengers.

Work to extend seven stations on the Penistone Line has already progressed, with work being completed at Berry Brow station this month.

Network Rail, TransPennine Express and Northern also completed a vital upgrade to extend platform two at Huddersfield station in December.

Work is ongoing at Brockholes, Shepley and Honley stations.

What did the officials say?

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail, said:

“It’s great to see progress being made on the upgrades at seven stations on the Penistone line.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that the closure of the car park at Denby Dale station causes. This work will mean passengers will benefit from modern, longer trains with more seats.

“We thank passengers and people who live near the railway for their patience whilst these improvements are carried out.”

Steve Hopkinson, Regional Director at Northern, said:

“The longer platforms – which have been in the pipeline for sometime – will enable us to run longer, better trains and, ultimately, give our customers on the Penistone Line a better service.

“We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep disruption to a minimum during the works, but I am calling on customers to bear with us while this vital work is carried out.”

  1. Lockwood and Denby Dale themselves on the other hand … Are also fine local Yorkshire Country Villages.

    The Penistone Line also crosses 2 Historic Viaducts – Lockwood Viaduct and Denby Dale Viaduct, they both span the respective local areas below as the line is carried across en-route to Barnsley, let alone Sheffield.

    Like the infamous Ribblehead Viaduct on the S&C … I do believe both Lockwood and Denby Dale Viaducts can only carry a single track across (presumably to save all costs).

    I also wonder, If the Penistone Line might one day see A Steam-Hauled Railtour long it’s Rails of the Track once again one day.

  2. This is Absolutely Good News

    I always knew most of the train stations en-route along the Penistone Line would eventually get a long overdue sort of upgrade each, Even after decades of short platforms, pesky pacer short trains and to at long last bring the whole Penistone Route into the 21st Century.

    I wonder if the other disused opposite platform at Lockwood might get cleared, restored and brought back to good use, let alone install a run-round loop in-between.

    I previously rode along this Scenic Railway, Cracking Views of the West (& South) Yorkshire Countryside.
