Nexus has announced that the Tyne and Wear Metro ticket machines are now ready to accept the new plastic £20 notes that have just entered circulation.

Over 184 ticket machines on the system that can accept notes have been given a software upgrade so that they will take the new polymer £20 banknotes, which entered circulation on Thursday 20th February.

Nexus carried out the work to get the Metro ticket machines ready for the note in advance of its launch date so that customers can use the new notes immediately.

What do you think of this? Have you got a new £20 note yet? Are there places it doesn’t work yet? Let us know in the comments below.

What did the officials say?

Customer Services Director, Huw Lewis, said:

“I’m pleased to say that our ticket machines are ready to accept the new £20 note from today.”

“We ensured that the ticket machines were ready for this change in advance of the Bank of England putting the new notes into circulation.”

“It was two weeks of work applying software upgrades to 184 ticket machines across out network of 60 stations to ensure they recognised the new polymer note.”

“We followed the same process when the new five pound note was launched in 2016, and the new ten pound note in 2017.”

  1. All railway stations in England will soon have to upgrade their ticket machines to accept new £20 notes. Including on the London Underground, DLR, Trams and even on buses & taxis outside of London that will allow new £20 notes. As people in London use Oyster PAYG contactless cards and bank contactless cards.
