Network Rail has announced that applications for the September 2020 apprenticeship scheme have opened.
The applications will close when all apprenticeship places have been filled.
The apprentices will receive expert training for three years, developing important skills necessary for the job, while earning income.

Network Rail is encouraging potential candidates that are 18 and up from all backgrounds to apply. There is no upper age limit. Now is an excellent time to join, as Britain’s railway network is undergoing is the most extensive upgrade since it was built.
Last year, the apprentice scheme had 32 people join the programme on the Paddington to Penzance route, which included a record number of women.

What did the officials say?
Second-year apprentice Morgan Powell said:
“I am so pleased that I joined the scheme, I honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It is such a great job and you really can see how the work you do directly affects people.
“I have been placed in a fantastic team with the best support around me. No day is the same which keeps the job interesting and you are faced with new challenges each day – whether it is the environment you’re in, the track conditions, or working to deadlines.”
Mark Langman, regional managing director for Network Rail’s Wales and Western, said:
“The Network Rail apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team where you make a difference every day, learning vital skills and making life-long friends. You’ll be taught by industry- leading experts and help to shape the railway of the future.
“I would encourage anyone with a passion and drive to make a difference to apply.”

With more electrification projects on the increase. I think Network Rail should continue with the electrification such as extending the electrification on the GWML from Cardiff Central to Swansea in South Wales and the electrification from Didcot Parkway to Oxford. And of course OHL renewals on the GEML (including at Stratford) and continuing on replacing OHL on the Southend Victoria line and of course replacing 1950s OHLE on the LTS line between Bromley-by-Bow & Fenchurch Street in East London and Ardwick-Hatfield/Gosslop in Greater Manchester. With further electrification in the Greater Manchester area including to Stalybridge.
