Network Rail is advising road users about a major bridge upgrade over the railway between Chester and Crewe.

Between February and October, the old bridge on Middlewich Road will be removed and replaced.

The £5.7m investment, part of the Great North Rail Project, will make the bridge more reliable to road users and passengers on the railway.

Traffic will be affected by the work first, when preparation for the bridge removal starts later this month.

Middlewich Road will go down to one lane from Monday to Friday between 24 February 2020 – 20 March 2020.

The road will then reopen until June, however, will close again for work to be completed by October 2020.

Some railway closures will be needed from June when the bridge itself will be removed.

This bridge replacement follows the £11m bridge refurbishment scheme at Sydney Road in September last year.

What did the officials say?

Oluwole Osunneye, scheme project manager at , said:

“We are grateful to drivers and pedestrians in for their patience whilst we build a new bridge on Middlewich Road.

“This huge investment is part of the Great North Rail Project and will help to deliver a safe and reliable railway for years to come.”
