Greater Anglia passengers in East Anglia saw the punctuality of train services improve last year, new figures have revealed.

Greater Anglia was named ‘most improved’ operator for the punctuality of its train services in Essex and Hertfordshire after figures were announced by Modern Railways’ Fourth Friday Club and the Institution of Railway Operators at the annual ‘Golden Whistles’ awards.

Punctuality on these lines improved by 13.1% compared to the previous year.

The operator’s Norwich – London Intercity services also recorded a 13.5% improvement on the previous year’s figure. This makes the service the second ‘most improved’ of all long-distance train operators in the UK.

The Institution of Railway Operators measured all UK train services which arrived within 59 seconds of their scheduled time up to 9th November 2019 on a moving annual average using industry data.

The awards come after the operator’s Class 321 trains saw an improvement of reliability of 165% last year compared to the previous year.

Since the end of 2018, Greater Anglia has been on a drive to improve the performance of the railway in East Anglia.

The Great Eastern Main Line and Southend Line saw four successive months of over 94.5 per cent from March to June.

The improvements meant fewer delayed trains with over 35,000 services that were late in 2018 arriving within one minute of their scheduled arrival time in 2019.

What did the officials say?

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, said:

“I am delighted that the work of our train service delivery, depot and fleet teams to improve the performance of our trains, while at the same time undertaking the complex task of testing and introducing a whole new train fleet, has been recognised at the Golden Whistles Awards.

“We are replacing every single train with brand new trains, but until then we will continue to make our existing trains as reliable as possible, which is why we have invested over £23 million in reliability improvements to provide the consistent and improving levels of train service performance that our customers expect.”

  1. So pleased they’ve won all these awards. But🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔??? Blowing their own trumpets?? North Norfolk s record has been abysmal!

  2. And what is Greater Anglia going to do with the Class 321 and Class 317. As the Class 360 and Class 379 are to be cascaded elsewhere. Class 360/1s to be cascaded to East Midlands Railway from December and Class 379s could be cascaded to Great Northern. Or half of 379s to Great Western Railway and other half 379s to Heathrow Express or cascaded to Gautrain.

  3. Well that just shows that these awards mean nothing as if you ask the actual paying commuters that use the service akin-Fri at peak times (not the daytime occasional users) we’ll tell you that they’ve been a shambles for years and years. I’ve been paid out on 28 different delay repay claims in 2020 alone which means that I’ve only arrived at my destination on a handful of occasions this year.
They’re embarrassing and they lie about their service and they cancel at the drop of a hat rather than run a late service.
Spin and fudged stats do not make a decent franchise when the year before they were appalling. They still are!

  4. How on earth do they get away with this rubbish? I have been commuting on the Greater Anglia Southend to Liverpool Street line for over 30 years. To be fair, it’s never been great but this last year was the worst that I have ever known…. and it continues to be poor – day in day out!

  5. How has the “service” from Greater Anglia improved?? Last time I checked I’ve raised quite a significant amount of complaints about the constant short formed, delayed and cancelled trains in the Hertfordshire region
If anything the service is even worse than Than it was last year
And this is after a fare hike from Greater Anglia!!

  6. No the service has not improved, in fact in the Hertfordshire area the trains are regularly delayed, short formed and cancelled
Exactly how has Greater Anglia “improved” on the services?? Considering they have hiked up fares???

    1. I know when we went to the santa train we had to get a coach from Norwich to Sheringham but they coud not be arsed to do one for return leg

  7. How can they justify this. Continously failing to serve North Norfolk, East Norfolk and LST being out of Acton for so long. There must have been a backhander somewhere

  8. 10 Class 745/0 12-Car London-Norwich Intercity
    10 Class 745/1 12-Car Stansted Express
(20 Class 745 Stadler Flirt Electric)

    14 Class 755/3 3-Car East Anglia Regional/Local
    24 Class 755/4 4-Car East Anglia Regional/Local
    (58 Class 755 Stadler Flirt Bi-Mode)

    22 Class 720/1 10-Car Essex & West Anglia Commuter
    89 Class 720/5 5-Car Essex & West Anglia Commuter
(111 Class 720 Bombardier Aventra Electric)

In total Greater Anglia will have 189 brand new rolling stocks.

Plus some of their new rolling stocks have broken down. So apparently not good for Greater Anglia.
