The 4709 Group have announced that the patterns to produce both cylinder blocks for their new-build Great Western Railway locomotive 47XX Class No 4709 are finished.
The Group has spent much time on perfecting the design for the new cylinder blocks, from creating the initial Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawing to carrying out stress analysis on the CAD drawing, to ensuring the design meets modern mainline operation standards set out by Network Rail.
With this work completed, the patterns have now been produced in polystyrene by Premier Patterns in Dudley.
The next steps will see both castings formed (planned to take place within the next few weeks), heat-treated, machined and assembled together. The Group hopes the completed cylinder blocks will be attached to 4709’s frame during Spring 2020.
