Class 60 locomotive arrives at the Wensleydale Railway

The Wensleydale Railway has announced that a diesel locomotive has arrived at Leeming Bar yesterday.

The Class 60, No. 60086, has arrived at Leeming Bar ahead of restoration and return to running condition.

60086, currently see in two-tone grey with EWS on the side of the locomotive, has been sat at Toton since around 2005 after being withdrawn from service.

60086 is also special as it hauled the last limestone train on the in 1992.

Having been sat for such a long time, the Class 60 diesel locomotive was in no fit state to travel on the mainline to the Wensleydale Railway, so thanks to Allelys Haulage, the locomotive arrived on the back of a low loader.

It was definitely a day of arrivals for the Wensleydale Railway, as alongside the Class 60, Ex-Northern pacers, No. 142028 and 142060, also arrived ahead of running at the Wensleydale Railway.

The Pacers will be used to support the railway’s off-peak and educational visits.

What do you think of these arrivals? It’s great to see modern locomotives making their way into preservation for future generations to enjoy.

  1. 60050 “Roseberry Topping” also at the Wensleydale in EW & S colours,fantastic,I was lucky enough to be allowed to photograph them both just before lockdown as well as Tornado, hopefully the 60’s will be fully restored & returned to running condition,not a big fan of the 142’s though,the most uncomfortable loco I’ve ever been on

I have a oo guage lima class 60 locomotive at home here in kidlington it’s livery is two tone freight Grey with the petroleum livery on it and it’s number is also 60050 and its name is rosemary topping it’s good to see the original locomotive is being restored and preserved congratulations to all volunteers and paid staff that are willing to put their own time and money into preserving locomotives whether they be steam or diesel locomotives

  2. Furthermore … Am Also Surprised to see another Pair of Pacers make their way for Pastures New up at the Wensleydale Railway, Which I think is A Wonderful Idea,

    Much Better than seeing these Pacers face the Scrap Line … Because I think the Pacers have further Potential of being Preserved for Roaming the Well-Restored Rails of Railway Heritage in-between.

    These Pacers have never (nor at all once) ran along the Wonderful Wensleydale Line, But know once they’ve settled they’ll get a chance to carry passengers/visitors up and down one of the most scenic routes this part of Yorkshire has to offer.

    I wonder if the WR Aim to Repaint these Pacers (Only Time Shal Tell).
    If so, I wonder which classic BR Liveries

Have a oo guage class 60 lima locomotive at home here in kidlington in oxfordshire it’s in two tone freight Grey with number 60050 and the name is roseberry topping and it has the petroleum livery on it and it’s good to see the volunteers and paid staff putting time and money into preserving locomotives whether they are steam or diesel locomotives from John in kidlington in oxfordshire

  3. Wow, the Wensleydale Railway sure does have a good use (as well as being a new home) for such an all new addition to the UK Preservation Movemement (let alone the Heritage Sector).

    I Always knew the British Rail Class 60 would have potential of entering Preservation, to Roam the Rails of Painstakingly Restored Train-Track en-route.

    Let’s Hope some more Class 60s are Potentially Preserved. (I Hope)
