The Epping Ongar Railway has announced that 2019 was a record year for passenger numbers.
The heritage railway carried 45,710 passengers in 2019, which was 3,906 more than the previous record set in 2018.
The passenger numbers in 2019 were boosted by a bumper year for passengers on the Santa Specials, over 16,000 people travelled on trains throughout December.
Earlier in the year, strong attendances at the event including Real Ale Festival and Ongars Dinosaurs both contributed to the impressive results.
The Railway’s Epping Fryer ‘Fish and Chip’ specials have proved to be very popular alongside the new Ploughman’s Lunch and Afternoon Cream Tea services.
The Railway’s 2020 season starts in February where children’s fares will be reduced to £1 as part of its half-term ‘Kids for a Quid’ offer (19, 20,21,22,23 February).
What did the officials say?
Roger Wright, Managing Director said,
“Again, the hard work and dedication of the Railway’s staff and volunteers has paid off with these pleasing results. The results are part of a long term trend of growth at the Epping Ongar Railway and with an exciting programme for 2020 we look forward to welcoming even more passengers.”
Dean Walton, General Manager said,
“We have learnt that in addition to riding on a heritage train and bus our passengers are looking for a complete experience. And when we put that on whether through a dining service, or an event day the passengers will come. With that in mind, the staff and volunteers have crafted an exciting package of events and services for 2020 and we are sure that we will feature on the list of destinations for many people in London and Essex in 2020.”
